Jaunpur,
24 April (HS): An incidence of custody abuse was reported in Jaunpur, Uttar
Pradesh. Two cops reportedly restrained
the youth around a pillar while a third policeman violently whipped him inside
Mungrabadsahpur police station.
According to sources, the victim suffered injuries as a consequence of
police mistreatment.
A
video of the custody mistreatment has emerged online, causing considerable
indignation against the police.
Inspector Dilip Kumar Singh has been brought after removal of police
officer, SHO Vinod Mishra, after the incident's video went viral. The move against SHO Vinod Mishra has
elicited conflicting views among internet users. Some people applauded the action taken
against the guilty officer, while others wonder if simply sending the inspector
to headquarters (line hazir) is enough to prevent similar harsh crimes inside
police stations.
Questions
have also been raised about why no punishment has yet been taken against the
two cops who supported the SHO during the attack. According to reports, the youth had given the
inspector money to accomplish a certain assignment. When the job was not completed, he requested
his money back. This apparently
infuriated the SHO, who then instructed his men to tie up the youth and
transport him to the station. Vinod
Mishra is accused of violently beating the youth at the police station. It has also been stated that many complaints
were filed against SHO Vinod Mishra for extorting money from the people, but no
action was done.
