02 April (HS): On Wednesday, Jhansi police confiscated more than a quintal of
illicit ganja (cannabis) being smuggled from Odisha to Punjab and
detained two smugglers, according to an official. The police believe that the
recovered contraband has a market worth of more than Rs 25 lakh. According to
Additional Superintendent of Police (City) Gyanendra Kumar Singh, the accused,
Krishna (34) of EWS Colony, Ludhiana, and Ranbir (31) of Tingari Khurd,
Ludhiana, were trafficking 113 kg of cannabis disguised in 114 packets inside the
truck's chassis.
They
were apprehended and detained during a regular check near Parichha by Badagaon
police and a special unit. During interrogation, the accused admitted to
carrying the contraband from Odisha to Ludhiana, Singh added.
They
have been charged with violating the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances
(NDPS) Act and have been sentenced to jail. The authorities are conducting
additional investigations to find their collaborators, he said.
