Murshidabad, 2 April (H.S.): At least four persons including a minor were killed in a road accident that took place at New Dak Bungalow-Jamia Katan area on National Highway No. 12 in Shamsherganj police station area of Murshidabad district on Tuesday evening. The accident occurred at around 8 pm on when four people riding a motorcycle were crossing the road. Meanwhile, a container truck coming at a high speed hit them. Three people died on the spot, while a minor was taken to a nursing home in critical condition, where he died.
According to Jangipur Police District Superintendent Anand Roy, preliminary investigation revealed that the container tried to flee towards Malda after the accident, but the police seized it. One of the deceased has been identified as Ejaz Sheikh, who was a resident of North Mahadevnagar area. Efforts are being made to identify the rest of the deceased.
In protest against this incident, the local people started protesting by blocking the national highway and prevented the police from removing the dead bodies. People alleged that police and civic volunteers often extort money from vehicles in the area, which affects traffic. They said that the accident occurred when the container driver tried to escape. The highway remained blocked till 9 pm, causing a traffic jam on both sides.
Senior officials of Jangipur police reached the spot and tried to pacify the crowd and held talks to control the situation.
