Former Barrackpore MP Arjun Singh Gets Interim Relief from Calcutta High Court

Kolkata, 2 April (H.S.): Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and former Barrackpore MP Arjun Singh has received interim relief from the Calcutta High Court. The court has put a stay on any coercive action or arrest against him until Wednesday.

Arjun Singh is facing legal trouble in connection with a shooting incident. The Barrackpore ACJM Court issued an arrest warrant against him on Tuesday. In response, Singh filed an appeal in the Calcutta High Court.

Justice Joy Sengupta's bench stated that no punitive action could be taken against him at this stage.

On Monday, Arjun Singh said that he had already approached the High Court. The case dates back to the night of March 26-27, when some unidentified miscreants allegedly attacked his residence, leaving one person, Saddam Hossain, injured.

Following this incident, the police have summoned Arjun Singh multiple times. The Officer-in-Charge of Jagaddal police station also visited his residence for questioning. The police are investigating the severity of Saddam Hossain’s injuries from the gunfire.

BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari has backed Arjun Singh, accusing the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and state police of deliberately targeting him for political reasons.

Former BJP state president Dilip Ghosh said, Arjun Singh is very active in the area, which is why Trinamool Congress is continuously targeting him.

Arjun Singh won the 2019 Lok Sabha election from Barrackpore on a BJP ticket. However, he later switched to the Trinamool Congress. After being denied a ticket for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, he returned to the BJP.

In 2022, he rejoined TMC, only to switch back to BJP in 2024, just before the Lok Sabha elections. Before 2019, he was a long-time TMC leader and had won the Bhatpara Assembly seat four times consecutively since 2001. In 2020, he was also appointed as the vice-president of BJP's West Bengal unit.
