Bio-Mining to Be Implemented for Waste Removal at Madhyamgram's Badu Dumping Ground

Kolkata, 2 April (H.S.) - After the devastating fire at the Badu dumping ground in Madhyamgram, the municipality has decided to use bio-mining technology for waste removal. This decision was made during a meeting with district officials, and work will commence from today i.e. Wednesday, confirmed Madhyamgram Municipality Chairman Nimai Ghosh.

The fire, which broke out last Saturday, spread rapidly due to methane gas accumulation from the decades-old waste at the site. The incident led to severe damage to nearby houses, causing panic among residents. Although the fire was brought under control, smoke continued to rise from certain pockets even after 72 hours.

Madhyamgram Municipality, along with key officials from the district administration, KMDA, and police, has formulated a strategy to address the issue. The proposed plan includes:

Leveling the Waste Mounds: The waste at the site will be flattened with financial assistance from KMDA.

Landfill and Waste Processing: After leveling, a landfill will be created, followed by the application of bio-mining technology. This will help in generating organic soil and fertilizers.

Security and Infrastructure Development: Roads, lighting, and water supply will be improved around the dumping ground, along with the installation of eight CCTV cameras for surveillance.

Madhyamgram MLA and Food Minister Rathin Ghosh on Wednesday highlighted the benefits of bio-mining, stating that the extracted soil will be used for filling low-lying areas and road construction. Additionally, plastic waste from the site will be sent to cement factories for recycling.
