Barcelona, April 15 (H.S.): In the matches played on Monday at the Barcelona Open 2025, World No. 8 Andrey Rublev and Denmark's Holger Rune delivered strong performances to secure their spots in the last 16.

Russian star Andrey Rublev started the tournament on a high note by defeating Dutch player Jasper De Jong 6-1, 6-3 in the first round. Rublev, who has been struggling with poor form recently, showcased aggressive play in this match. After losing a break in the 5th game of the first set, Rublev won the next six games to easily claim the set.

In the second set, Rublev took a 3-2 lead and ultimately secured the match with a long shot from De Jong. It is worth mentioning that Rublev has recently appointed former World No. 1 Marat Safin as his coach.

In the day's first match, Denmark's Holger Rune defeated Spain's experienced player and retired Albert Ramos-Vinolas 7-5, 6-4 to enter the last 16. Rune, who had to withdraw from the Monte Carlo Masters last week due to food poisoning, hit 28 outstanding winners in this match.

After the match, Rune stated, It was important to start well here after a rough week in Monaco. I currently feel fit and healthy, which is the biggest relief for me.
