Dunedin, March 18 (H.S.): Due to heavy rain in Dunedin on Tuesday, the third T20 match between the New Zealand and Sri Lanka women's cricket teams ended without a result, leaving the three-match series tied at 1-1.
Only 14.1 overs of play were possible in the third T20 due to the rain. New Zealand had a great start in their innings after Sri Lankan captain Chamari Athapaththu won the toss and chose to bowl first. Suzie Bates and Georgia Plimmer added 60 runs in the first eight overs, but then rain interrupted the game.
Play resumed, but soon Bates was dismissed for 28 runs off 31 balls, caught off Athapaththu's bowling. Rain returned again, and the match was reduced to 15 overs per side. The Sri Lankan bowlers took full advantage of this break and claimed two wickets.
However, Plimmer continued her excellent form, remaining not out on 46 runs, which included three fours and two sixes. But rain interfered once more, leading to the match being called off.
Sri Lankan captain Chamari Athapaththu was named the Player of the Series. She scored innings of 64* and 23 runs, and had bowling figures of 1/10, 0/19, and 1/19.
