Kolkata, 14 March (H.S.) : West Bengal’s Leader of Opposition, Suvendu Adhikari, has announced that he will not attend a scheduled meeting with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee next week. He alleged that the state government was tampering with evidence in the RG Kar Medical College rape and murder case and said his absence would be a mark of protest.
The meeting, scheduled for March 19, was set to discuss the appointment of the West Bengal Information Commissioner. The Chief Minister, the Leader of the Opposition, and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay were expected to be present. Adhikari had received an invitation from the State Personnel and Administrative Reforms Department but formally informed the department secretary in writing that he would not attend.
Adhikari stated that he would not participate in any meeting involving the Chief Minister until those responsible for the case, including government officials and influential ruling party leaders, were brought to justice. The government is shielding criminals, the police are tampering with evidence, and the Chief Minister remains silent, he alleged.
He also questioned why the parents of the deceased woman doctor had not yet received her death certificate. It has been seven months since the incident, yet the State Health Department, Kolkata Municipal Corporation, and RG Kar Medical College administration are making them run from one office to another, Adhikari said.
