Agartala, 05 February (HS): A man trying to illegally enter the Indian border in Tripura was shot by BSF personnel in self-defense, injuring him.
The incident took place near Border Outpost (BOP) Putia in Sepahijala district. It is worth mentioning that Tripura's international border with Bangladesh is 856 km long.
According to the BSF, two suspects—a man and a woman—were trying to cross the border fence from the Bangladesh side. Despite several warnings, they ignored the instructions. When the BSF sentry stopped them, they tried to snatch his Pump Action Gun (PAG).
In self-defense and under Standard Operating Procedure (SOP), the sentry fired a shot, injuring the man, while the woman managed to escape to a nearby village.
Subsequent investigation identified the injured man as Akhtar Jamal Rony, resident of Putia, Boxanagar, Sepahijala, India. He admitted that he was entering India from Bangladesh without valid documents.
BSF jawans immediately provided medical aid to the injured man. Officials said the matter is under investigation. BSF is fully committed to safeguarding the international border and preventing illegal entry, the BSF said.
