Imphal, 27 February (HS): In response to the Manipur Governor’s appeal, a total of 307 illegal weapons were surrendered across the state, marking a crucial step toward peace.

The surrendered arms, including various firearms, were handed over by youth volunteers, community leaders, civil society organizations (CSOs), and women’s groups. While 246 weapons were deposited at the 1st Manipur Rifles Campus, 61 more were surrendered at multiple locations across the valley and hill districts.

This mass surrender follows a seven-day deadline set by the governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, urging individuals to voluntarily submit looted or unauthorized weapons. With the deadline expiring today, officials have reiterated their call for compliance, assuring no punitive action against those who surrender before the cutoff.

Authorities have acknowledged the significant role played by CSOs and local leaders in facilitating the initiative. Emphasizing the importance of disarmament for lasting peace, officials warned of strict legal action against those who retain illegal arms beyond the deadline.

Security forces and state administration continue to work closely with communities, aiming to restore harmony and prevent further violence.
