New Delhi, 25 February (HS): The domestic stock market had mixed trading today. Despite trading with gains for most of the day, Nifty closed in red for the sixth consecutive day today. However, the Sensex managed to maintain its gains despite the pressure of selling at the last moment. After the whole day's trading, the Sensex closed with a gain of 0.20 percent. On the other hand, the Nifty ended today's trading with a slight decline of 0.03 percent.
Today, during the whole day's trading, there was continuous selling in the shares of metal, oil and gas and realty sector. Similarly, IT, Public Sector Enterprise, Energy, Pharmaceutical and Capital Goods index also closed with a decline. On the other hand, automobile, FMCG consumer durable and tech index managed to close with gains. There was continuous selling in the broader market today, due to which the BSE midcap index closed with a weakness of 0.57 percent. Similarly, the smallcap index ended today's trading with a decline of 0.45 percent.
Due to the weakness in the stock market today, the wealth of stock market investors decreased by about Rs 2 lakh crore. The market capitalization of companies listed on the BSE decreased to Rs 396.04 lakh crore (provisional) after today's trading. Whereas on the previous trading day i.e. Monday, their market capitalization was Rs 397.97 lakh crore. In this way, investors lost about Rs 1.93 lakh crore from today's trading.
Today, there was active trading in 4,057 shares in BSE during the day's trading. Of these, 1,668 shares closed with a gain, while 2,258 shares declined, while 131 shares closed without any fluctuation. Today, there was active trading in 2,603 shares in NSE. Out of these, 988 stocks closed in the green mark after making profit and 1,615 stocks closed in the red mark after suffering loss. Similarly, out of the 30 stocks included in the Sensex, 17 stocks closed with a gain and 13 stocks closed with a loss. Whereas, out of the 50 stocks included in the Nifty, 19 stocks closed in the green mark and 31 stocks closed in the red mark.
The BSE Sensex opened today with a weakness of 14.11 points at the level of 74,440.30 points. As soon as the trading started, due to the selling pressure, this index fell to 74,400.37 points. Shortly after this, buyers became active in the market. Due to the buying by the buyers, this index reached the level of 74,785.08 points with a strength of 330.67 points before 10 am. After this, the Sensex continued to trade in the green mark with minor fluctuations throughout the day, but due to the start of selling in the market shortly before 3 pm, the index slipped more than 180 points from the upper level and closed at 74,602.12 points with a gain of 147.71 points.
Like the Sensex, NSE's Nifty also started trading today with a weakness of 36.90 points at the level of 22,516.45 points. Due to the support of buying after the market opened, the index reached 22625.30 points with a strength of 71.95 points in the first half hour of trading. The index continued to trade with gains throughout the day, but due to the start of profit booking at 3 pm, the Nifty lost all its gains and closed at 22,547.55 points with a weakness of 5.80 points. After the whole day's trading, among the big stocks of the stock market, Mahindra & Mahindra 2.53 percent, Bharti Airtel 2.50 percent, Bajaj Finance 1.60 percent, Nestle 1.35 percent and Maruti Suzuki 1.06 percent were included in the list of top 5 gainers of today. On the other hand, Hindalco Industries 3.50 percent, Dr. Reddy's Laboratories 3.13 percent, Trent Limited 2.09 percent, Sun Pharmaceuticals 1.58 percent and Hero Motocorp 1.46 percent were included in the list of top 5 losers of today.
