Kolkata, 23 December (H.S.): RG Kar Medical College and Hospital has once again been drawn into controversy after serious allegations of ragging surfaced from one of its hostels on Tuesday, triggering anxiety and tension across the campus.
According to college sources, first-year students have accused their seniors of harassment under the guise of so-called introductions. The college administration has taken note of these complaints and is closely monitoring the situation.
These allegations come at a time when RG Kar Medical College is already under public and institutional scrutiny following the horrific rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor within the campus in 2024. This incident had shaken the entire state. A court has since convicted civic volunteer Sanjay Roy and sentenced him to life imprisonment in the case.
The latest allegations stem from the Maniktala hostel, which is officially designated for first-year students only. According to hostel rules, only new students are permitted to reside there, but it is alleged that several second-year students were also staying there, raising serious questions about rule violations.
According to the allegations, first-year students were intimidated, threatened, and humiliated in various ways. Some students allege they were verbally abused during the so-called introduction sessions, while others claim attempts were made to physically assault them. Sources indicate that when the junior students complained to the administration, the situation escalated, and the accused senior students allegedly attacked the complainants.
According to sources, the college administration summoned the second-year students named in the complaints and issued them a warning. Despite this, the situation remained tense. Later, another clash occurred between first and second-year students on a public road, where the junior students were allegedly subjected to further threats. Following this, the affected students submitted a detailed written complaint to the administration outlining the entire sequence of events.
At the time of filing of this report, no official statement has been issued by the college administration. However, a senior source at the institution stated that the matter is actively under consideration. They said the administration is investigating the allegations and will take necessary steps to ensure that no culture of intimidation or harassment is allowed to flourish at the college.
