Guwahati, 24 November (HS): DoHUA Minister Jayanta Mallabarua on Monday laid the foundation stone for a drain-cum-road project at Juripar, aiming to address the locality’s persistent problem of artificial flooding during monsoon.

The Minister said Juripar has long suffered from inadequate drainage due to the narrowing of the Juri stream, rapid urbanisation and increased hill runoff. He added that the integrated drainage system will direct rainwater to Silsakoo before it is released into the Brahmaputra.

Mallabarua informed that the project will use an open-drain design to prevent blockage from silt flow and appreciated residents for cooperating with land adjustments. He also noted that excavation work at Silsakoo, covering about 800 bighas, is underway and expected to be completed this dry season.

He said the combined initiatives will significantly reduce flooding in Juripar and across Guwahati, and instructed officials to expedite work.
