Delhi, 14 November (H.S.): Global life sciences company Bayer announced on Friday the launch of 'Alivio,' a novel digital solution designed to protect farmers from weather-related risks. The name 'Alivio,' Spanish for 'relief,' reflects the product's aim to provide farmers with immediate, actionable insights and support through an integrated mobile app, redesigning the process of loss mitigation.
In a statement, the company explained that 'Alivio' moves beyond traditional insurance models. Developed in partnership with the public sector insurer United India Insurance Company, the platform leverages high-resolution satellite data and advanced crop modeling. This technology provides tailored protection aligned with specific crop growth stages and local geographical conditions, offering a more precise and responsive safety net.
Unlike conventional insurance products that often lack transparency, 'Alivio' operates on a system of instant, data-driven triggers. The platform provides an assurance benefit based on plot-specific agronomic parameters, which farmers can redeem instantly at the nearest Bayer channel partner. This allows for the immediate purchase of quality seeds and necessary crop protection products, enabling farmers to counter challenges during the crop cycle and reducing in-season anxiety.
The initial phase of the launch targets rain-fed maize crops in Davangere, Karnataka, and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Maharashtra—regions where inconsistent rainfall frequently impacts yield. 'Alivio' will monitor plot-based conditions and automatically trigger the assurance benefit if a deficit in soil moisture is detected during a critical growth stage.
The benefit will be delivered to the farmer's 'Alivio' mobile app for redemption.Simon Wiebusch, Country Divisional Head for Bayer's Crop Science Division in India, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka, stated, 'Alivio' demonstrates Bayer's commitment to delivering digital innovation to the farmers who need it most.
By combining agronomic intelligence with superior design and a reliable local network, we are helping smallholder farmers make self-reliance not just possible, but practical.
This initiative is a significant step towards Bayer's global goal of reaching 100 million smallholder farmers by 2030, enhancing their productivity, resilience, and sustainability.
