Guwahati, 29 October (HS): “When I die, immerse me in the Brahmaputra. The Brahmaputra is like my father. I love this river more than the sea—it is the only male river in the world,” Zubeen Garg had once said.
On Wednesday morning, in accordance with rituals, the ashes of the legendary Assamese singer and cultural icon Zubeen Garg—who passed away untimely on September 19 —were immersed in the sacred waters of the Brahmaputra.
The emotional ceremony took place at the Kachamari Ghat in Guwahati in the presence of family members and admirers. Zubeen’s wife, Garima Garg, tearfully performed the immersion rituals.
Simultaneously, Zubeen’s brother Arun Garg, who had performed the last rites, immersed a portion of the ashes in the Brahmaputra at Jorhat.
Both Garima and Arun, overwhelmed with grief, offered their final farewell to the beloved artist, fulfilling his heartfelt wish to rest eternally in the embrace of the Brahmaputra.
