Chennai, 28 October (H.S.) : The Tamil Nadu Water Resources Department (WRD) has issued a flood warning to villages situated along the banks of the Palar River in Kanchipuram District after a significant volume of surplus water was released from upstream water bodies.
The directive was sent to the Kanchipuram District Collector on Tuesday, advising immediate alerts for residents in villages across the Kanchipuram, Walajabad, and Uthiramerur taluks.
The warning was necessitated by a discharge of 10,626 cubic feet per second (cusecs) of water into the Palar River. Due to the continued heavy rainfall in the region, officials anticipate a possible further increase in the river’s inflow, raising concerns for low-lying areas.
As a crucial precautionary measure, local authorities have strictly advised residents to avoid all activities near the river. People have been warned against entering the water, crossing it, bathing, or washing clothes in the river. Furthermore, locals are directed to keep their livestock away from the riverbanks to ensure safety and prevent accidents.
The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai has issued intense rainfall alerts for coastal areas, as several districts in Tamil Nadu, including Tiruvallur, Chennai, Kanchipuram, Chengalpattu, and the Delta districts, are currently experiencing heavy downpour.
The RMC has also issued orange and yellow alerts for various parts of the state for the next four days, as weather systems over the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea continue to feed moisture into the region, indicating that the flood situation may persist.
