Depression Forms Over Bay of Bengal; Heavy Rain Forecast for Odisha

Bhubaneswar, 25 October (H.S.): The well-marked low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal has intensified into a depression, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported on Saturday.

According to the IMD, the system moved westwards and concentrated into a depression over the southeast Bay of Bengal. At 5:30 AM today, it was centered near latitude 10.8°N and longitude 89.0°E — approximately 420 km west-southwest of Port Blair (Andaman & Nicobar Islands), 990 km southeast of Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh), 990 km east-southeast of Chennai (Tamil Nadu), 1000 km southeast of Kakinada (Andhra Pradesh), and 1040 km south-southeast of Gopalpur (Odisha).

The IMD has predicted that the system will move west-northwestwards and intensify into a deep depression by October 26, and further strengthen into a cyclonic storm over the southwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal by the morning of October 27. It is then expected to track northwestwards toward the Andhra Pradesh coast over the subsequent 48 hours.

In view of the evolving weather conditions, fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea, as rough conditions are likely to prevail over the region.
