Odisha Fully Prepared for Possible Cyclone, Says Minister Suresh Pujari

Bhubaneswar, 24 October (H.S.): Odisha is fully prepared to face any situation arising from the developing weather system over the Bay of Bengal, assured Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari on Friday.

With the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting the potential formation of a cyclonic storm by October 27, the Minister stated that the state government has taken all proactive measures and urged the public to remain calm. “Whether or not a cyclone forms, authorities are ready. The public is urged not to panic,” he said.

Pujari added that cyclone shelters have been readied, the health department is on high alert, and adequate stocks of dry food and essential supplies have been ensured. Plans are also in place to evacuate people from vulnerable areas if necessary.

The Energy Department has been placed on high alert to ensure swift restoration of power in case of disruptions, and officials across departments have been instructed to stay vigilant and respond promptly to any emergency.

According to IMD, a low-pressure system over the southeast Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify into a depression by Saturday and further into a deep depression by October 26. The system is expected to move west-northwestwards and may develop into a cyclonic storm by the morning of October 27.

The Minister emphasized that Odisha is fully equipped to manage heavy rainfall, strong winds, and any potential impacts should the system evolve into a cyclone. Authorities are monitoring the situation closely and coordinating with district administrations to ensure safety and preparedness across the state.
