Bhubaneswar, 24 October (H.S.): The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning that the low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm by the morning of October 27. Under its influence, heavy rainfall and strong winds are expected across parts of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh, with the intensity peaking on October 28 and 29.
According to the IMD, wind speeds may reach 60 to 70 kmph during this period. While the exact landfall location remains uncertain, early indications suggest that Andhra Pradesh is likely to face a greater impact, whereas Odisha is expected to experience heavy rainfall and gusty winds.
Weather experts have forecast widespread rain and squally conditions across southern, central, and coastal Odisha for three consecutive days. The IMD has stated that a clearer picture of the cyclone’s track and intensity will emerge in the next 24 hours.
IMD Bhubaneswar Director Manorama Mohanty said, “The system is likely to develop into a depression on October 25, a deep depression on October 26, and a cyclone by the morning of October 27. While the cyclone may impact Andhra Pradesh directly, Odisha will experience heavy to very heavy rainfall during October 27–29, especially in the coastal regions.”
She added that Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Khordha, Puri, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, and Malkangiri are expected to witness heavy rainfall on October 27, while most parts of Odisha are likely to receive significant rainfall on October 28 and 29.
