Sangli, 24 Oct (HS): The proposal to change the
name of Islampur city in the Sangli district to Ishwarpur has been accepted by
the Government of India. The State Government had moved the proposal in July
this year during the Monsoon session of the State Legislature, and forwarded it
to the Centre.
The name of the city will now be Ishwarpur in all
the records of the municipality, zilla parishad, and all other government and
semi-government offices. Minister for Civic Supplies Chhagan Bhujbal had
announced that the resolution to change the name of Islampur was passed by the
state legislature and forwarded to the Centre.
About 4/5 decades ago the then RSS Islampur Chief
Pant Sabnis had raised the demand. In 1986 Shiv Sena Founder during his rally
at Yalamma Square had called it Ishwarpur and not Islampur. Since then the
demand to change the name of the city was being raised at various forums. Finally,
the demand has been accepted.
