- Condemns efforts by a section of Miya people to turn the site into a protest venue
Guwahati, 22 October (HS): The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has strongly condemned the attempt by a section of Miya people to desecrate the sanctity of Zubeen Kshetra in Sonapur and turn it into a protest site against the government.
Addressing a press conference on Tuesday, State BJP spokesperson Jayanta Kumar Goswami alleged that certain elements were conspiring against the government by exploiting the emotional atmosphere surrounding the untimely demise of popular singer Zubeen Garg to halt the eviction drives against illegal encroachers—particularly Miya settlers—on government, Satra (Vaishnavite monastery), forest and tribal belt lands.
Goswami stated that under the leadership of Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, the government has been working relentlessly to free nearly 65 lakh bighas of government, satra, forest and tribal belt land for the benefit of future generations. He said that some Miya elements are trying to misuse public sentiments and destabilize the government, but the BJP, with the people’s support, will firmly resist such moves.
He also announced that 65 lakh BJP karyakartas and millions of Zubeen Garg admirers across Assam have come together to launch a “Nyay Yatra” (Justice March) from today. The objective of this march is to ensure justice for Zubeen Garg’s death through judicial means and to preserve his music, work, and ideals so that they continue to shine forever like the sun.
Goswami further accused Lurinjyoti Gogoi, Akhil Gogoi and Gaurav Gogoi of running a false propaganda campaign to derail the investigation. Their supporters, he said, were spreading fake postmortem reports and misinformation on social media claiming that the accused were being kept in VIP facilities, all with the aim of diverting the course of justice.
He also accused Gaurav Gogoi of trying to create lawlessness in Assam by provoking the youth after Zubeen Garg’s death. However, he praised the young people of Assam for responding with restraint and focusing on peaceful justice rather than violence.
Goswami added that recently, under the leadership of Ahila Miya, supporters attempted to create chaos in front of the Baska Jail, which he described as part of a larger conspiracy. He appealed to the people of Assam to resist Gaurav Gogoi’s “malicious attempts.”
Reacting to actor Ravi Sharma’s comments about the trees around Dighalipukhuri, Goswami said Sharma’s statements were driven by personal motives rather than genuine concern for the environment. He clarified that not a single tree was cut down, but a few were relocated and replanted along the Brahmaputra riverbank.
Finally, Goswami criticized the Congress Party for failing to deliver justice in several historic cases in Assam and India. He challenged Opposition Leader Debabrata Saikia to explain why the Congress could not ensure justice for the children killed in the Dhemaji blast, the 855 martyrs of the Assam Movement and the hundreds of indigenous people killed in the Bodo areas during 2011–12 by Miya settlers.--------
