Delhi, 18 October (H.S.): Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his heartfelt greetings to the nation on Saturday on the auspicious occasion of Dhanteras, the festival that marks the beginning of Diwali celebrations.
In a post on the social media platform X, the Prime Minister conveyed his wishes for the well-being of all citizens. Many happy Dhanteras wishes to all my family members across the country. On this auspicious occasion, I wish everyone happiness, good fortune, and health, he stated. Invoking the blessings of the deity of medicine, he added, May Lord Dhanvantari shower his bountiful blessings on everyone.
Dhanteras, also known as Dhanvantari Trayodashi, is celebrated on the 13th lunar day of the Krishna Paksha in the Hindu month of Ashwin. The festival is dedicated to Lord Dhanvantari, the Hindu god of Ayurveda and healing, who is believed to have emerged from the cosmic ocean with the nectar of immortality.
Devotees pray to him for sound health and protection from illness. The day is considered highly auspicious for new purchases, particularly gold, silver, and new utensils, which are seen as symbols of good fortune and prosperity. Rituals for Dhanteras traditionally involve thoroughly cleaning and decorating homes and businesses.
Entrances are adorned with colorful rangoli patterns, and in the evening, rows of earthen lamps (diyas) are lit to welcome Goddess Lakshmi and ward off negative energy. A special puja is performed to honor Lord Dhanvantari, Lord Kuber (the god of wealth), and Goddess Lakshmi, with offerings of flowers, sweets, and fruits.
