Odisha Declares Two-Day Holiday for Diwali; Fourth Saturday to Be a Working Day

Bhubaneswar, 18 October (H.S.): The Odisha government on Saturday declared October 20 as an additional public holiday for Diwali, alongside the previously announced holiday on October 21. With this decision, government offices across the state will remain closed for two consecutive days during the festival of lights.

However, offices in Nuapada district will remain open on October 20 in view of the upcoming bypoll, the government clarified.

According to an official notification, the government has rescheduled the fourth Saturday (October 25) as a working day to compensate for the additional holiday.

The Revenue Department had earlier proposed October 20 as a holiday for Diwali, pending the Chief Minister’s approval. The recommendation was supported by the Srimandir Mukti Mandap Pandit Mahasabha, which noted that important rituals such as Paya Shraddha and Deepadana Shraddha commence on the evening of October 20.

With the new schedule, government offices—except those in Nuapada—will remain closed on October 20 and 21 for Diwali celebrations.
