Industrial Salt Freight Train from Gujarat Reaches Kashmir, Boosting Regional Trade

New Delhi, 18 October (H.S.): In a significant logistics milestone, the Northern Railway's Jammu Division has successfully overseen the arrival of the first-ever freight train carrying industrial salt to the Kashmir Valley. The consignment, comprising 1,350 tonnes of industrial salt in 21 BCN wagons, departed from the Kharaghoda Goods Shed in Gujarat and reached the Anantnag Goods Shed in Jammu and Kashmir on Friday. This inaugural shipment marks the commencement of rail-based transport for industrial salt to the valley.

According to railway officials, the salt is intended for the region's tanning industry, soap manufacturing units, and brick kilns. The initiative is a pivotal step toward connecting the valley with the rest of India through reliable and affordable rail transport, ensuring a continuous supply of essential commodities.

The new rail link is expected to significantly reduce transportation costs and transit times while lessening the region's dependence on road networks, which are often disrupted by adverse weather.

Ucit Singhal, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager of the Jammu Division, noted that this achievement will pave the way for increased freight traffic, thereby fortifying trade relations between Gujarat and Jammu and Kashmir. This development is part of a broader expansion of railway freight operations in the Kashmir Valley.

Recently, the first consignments of apples were transported from the valley to Delhi and other states, while industrial products like Maruti vehicles have also been delivered to the region via rail. These efforts by Indian Railways are strengthening the logistics network in the Union Territory, promising widespread benefits for its trade, industry, and population.
