Biswanath, 18 October (HS): Alongside the celebration of Kati Bihu, the people of Assam also observed Dhanteras on Saturday. Dhanteras is considered an auspicious occasion during which Goddess Kali is worshipped in the form of Goddess Lakshmi.

As per tradition, people purchase items like lotus flowers, cowries, turmeric, coriander seeds, broomsticks, gold and silver on this day, believing that such purchases bring prosperity and drive away financial hardships. Markets in Gohpur and other areas witnessed heavy footfall of customers on the occasion.

Kati Bihu, also known as Kangali Bihu, is one of the three major Bihu festivals of Assam. Celebrated on the Sankranti of the Assamese months of Asin and Kartik, it marks a period when the household granaries are nearly empty and the paddy fields are still in the growing stage.

In the evening, Assamese families light earthen lamps under the holy tulsi plant, around their courtyards, and in the paddy fields, praying for a good harvest and prosperity. In some places, sky lanterns are also lit, adding a festive glow to the night sky.
