Kolkata, 3 January (H.S.): The Tamluk-Ghatal Co-Operative Bank election in West Bengal has sparked controversy after allegations of violence and bomb attacks on a BJP leaders. In response, the BJP has filed a petition in the Calcutta High Court, demanding an investigation by the National Investigation Agency (NIA). Justice Jay Sengupta has sought a report from the state administration and police by Tuesday, treating the matter with urgency.Allegations of Bomb Attack and Police InactionOn the day of the election, unidentified miscreants allegedly hurled bombs at a BJP leader, creating panic in the area. The BJP has accused the police of inaction, claiming that instead of taking swift measures, law enforcement remained passive. The party alleges that the violence was orchestrated to manipulate the electoral process, possibly with the involvement of ruling party supporters.BJP leaders argue that fair and democratic elections in Bengal are becoming increasingly difficult, with intimidation tactics being used to suppress opposition voices. According to the party, the cooperative bank elections are being rigged, and violence is being deployed as a means to deter political rivals. This, they say, justifies the demand for an NIA probe.High Court’s Response and Next HearingHearing BJP’s plea, the Calcutta High Court has ordered the state administration to submit a detailed report on the incident by Tuesday. The court will then decide the next course of action based on the findings.
