Odisha Govt hikes pension for freedom fighters

Bhubaneswar, 2 January (H.S.)The Odisha government has announced a significant increase in pensions for freedom fighters, recognising their sacrifices during India’s struggle for independence.

Chief Minister Mohan Majhi made the announcement at the 38th Independence Fighters’ Day celebration, emphasising the need to honour these veterans and provide them with enhanced financial support.

The state government has doubled the monthly pension for freedom fighters who were imprisoned during the independence movement, raising it from ₹10,000 to ₹20,000.

Those who actively participated in the struggle but were not jailed will see their pensions increased from ₹9,000 to ₹15,000.

Additionally, individuals already receiving the national pension will now receive an enhanced amount of ₹10,000, up from the previous ₹8,000. Those detained under the Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA) during the Emergency will also be eligible for a pension of ₹20,000.

This move serves as both a financial boost and a gesture of respect for the sacrifices made by these individuals during India’s tumultuous fight for freedom. The Chief Minister underscored the importance of recognising Odisha’s often-overlooked freedom fighters.

He lamented that the contributions of figures such as Harekrushna Mahtab, Matangini Hazra, Veer Bagha Jatin, and Baji Rout remain underrepresented in educational materials. The martyrdom of Matangini Hazra and the bravery of young revolutionaries like Baji Rout deserve greater prominence in history textbooks, the Chief Minister stated.

Calling for corrective measures, the Chief Minister urged the inclusion of these heroes’ stories in school curricula to ensure that future generations understand and value their contributions.

The increased pensions, along with the emphasis on revisiting historical narratives, aim to provide not only financial security but also the recognition that these freedom fighters rightfully deserve. This initiative highlights the state government’s commitment to honouring the sacrifices that shaped India’s journey to independence.
