Guwahati, 10 January (HS): Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has introduced a laser based wheel profile management system. The measurement systems have two types - Calipri C42 and Calipri Prime. These systems are non-contact wheel profile measurement sensors, which are portable, light in weight and easy to operate. These measurement instruments meet the specified demands of the Railways by providing accurate and reproducible results, independent of operator influence. These special profile measurement instruments are widely used for wheel wear inspection, brake disc measurement, wheel back-to-back and diameter measurement and rail wear inspection.
NFR Chief Public Relations Officer Kapinjal Kishore Sharma informed that a set of wheels on a train is a uniquely fitted part and has a significant impact on passenger comfort and safety as well as noise and ride quality. Hence, the profile of wheels, brake discs, rails and switches is regulated by periodic measurement operations under difficult operating conditions. The challenge lies in the efficient production of valid measurement data for the entire wheel-rail system. Efficient wheel set profile measurement can lead to timely maintenance operations and help reduce train operation time, as well as ensure a smooth and safe journey for rail passengers.
It is worth mentioning that Calipri C42 is a multifunctional device, which can measure wheel profile, brake disc width, wheel diameter, tire thickness and wheel clearance etc. Calipri Prime focuses exclusively on wheel profile measurement only. It includes sensors and calibration equipment to measure wheel dimensions which are displayed on the sensor display and can be compared with predefined limit values.
