Abuja, 04 Sep
(HS): At least 127 villagers were killed in northeastern Nigeria by suspected
Boko Haram militants, Amnesty International said on Tuesday.
The attack
occurred in the Tarmuwa area of Yobe state, and is considered one of the deadliest
attacks. On Sunday evening, more than 50 extremists on motorcycles came to the
village and opened fire in a busy market killing worshippers and residents
inside their homes. The attackers also set many buildings ablaze causing
widespread distruction.
Yobe police
Spokesperson Dungus Abdulkarim attributed the attack to Boko Haram. The
militant group has been waging an insurgency in the region since 2009 seeking a
strict interpretation of Islamic law or Sharia across northeastern Nigeria.
The militant
group has been responsible for the deaths of at least 35,000 people and
displacement of over two million. Yobe government
conducted a mass funeral of 34 victims.
