NEW DELHI, 20 September (H.S.):The Third India-Peru Joint Commission
Meeting was co-chaired by Secretary (East) and H.E. Mr. John Peter Camino
Cannock, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of Peru in Lima.
India thanked Peruvian participation
of former Foreign Minister Mr. Javier Gonzalez-Olaechea in the third Voice of
Global South Summit (VOGSS) held in August this year, as well as, of President Ms.
Dina Boluarte and former Vice Foreign Minister Ambassador Higueras for their
participation in first and second editions of VOGSS. He congratulated Peru for
its bicentenary celebrations.
Both sides comprehensively reviewed
their bilateral relations and discussed ways to advance their collaboration in
commerce & trade, digital public infrastructure, energy & mining,
defence, railways, traditional medicine, science & technology, space,
development partnership, and cultural fields.
They also discussed relevant
multilateral and regional issues and took note of cooperation between the two
countries in multilateral and international organizations.
Both sides agreed to exchange visits
frequently and to periodically organize trade, cultural, educational, and other
bilateral events.
Secretary (East) also interacted with
Minister of Social Inclusion of Peru Mr. Julio Demartini and members of
India-Peru Bi-national Chamber of Commerce. Secretary (East) also met with
Peruvian Vice Minister of Health H.E. Mr. Eric Ricardo Pena Sanchez to discuss
health and pharmaceutical sector cooperation between the two countries.
Secretary (East) participated in the
celebrations of 60th anniversary of Indian Technical and Economic
Cooperation (ITEC)” day on 18 September and interacted with ITEC alumni.
Peruvian Vice Foreign Minister Mr. Peter Camino and Peruvian Vice Education
Minister H.E. Ms. Cecilia del Pilar García Díaz along with over 100 ITEC alumni
attended the event.
Earlier, Secretary (East) paid floral
tribute at the bust of Mahatma Gandhi at Lince Park, Lima and launched the
‘Swachhata hi Seva’ campaign of the Embassy of India in Lima. He also
administered the Swachhata pledge to Embassy officials and supervised the
Swachhata campaign undertaken by the Embassy. Secretary (East) planted a ‘Tree
of Life’ under the Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign in the premises of the
Embassy.
India established diplomatic
relations with Peru in March 1963. Until 1969, the Indian Ambassador in Chile
was concurrently accredited to Peru. In September 1969, India opened its
resident Mission in Lima. The first resident Indian Ambassador in Lima took
charge in November 1973. India-Peru relations have traditionally been cordial
and friendly. Since early 2000s, the relationship has acquired more economic
and business content leading to a Joint Study on Feasibility of a Trade
Agreement.
Trade between India and Peru is
growing. The total trade between two countries in the Financial Year 2022-23
was US$3291.64 million, of which India’s exports were worth US $1160.64 million
and imports from Peru were US$ 2,131.00 million. (source: SUNAT) India’s main
exports to Peru include automobiles, motorcycles and three-wheelers, polyester
and cotton yarns, pharmaceuticals, iron and steel products, plastic products,
rubber, pipes for oil and gas industry, tyres, pipes etc. Main imports from
Peru are gold, copper, synthetic filaments, phosphates of calcium, fresh
grapes, fish flour, etc
