Kolkata, July 5 (HS): An attempt was made to rob a flat located at a multi-storey building in Lake Avenue area under Tollygunge police station in Kolkata on Tuesday evening, but the attempt failed due to the alertness of the people living in the building.

According local sources, an attempt was made to rob a flat in the multi-storey building on Thursday evening. But, as soon as the residents of the flat shouted, some other residents of the building became alert. Seeing the situation adverse, the robbers fled. On the way, they allegedly fired in the air. However, there is no report of any casualty in this incident.

According to local sources, an elderly couple Debashish De (65) and his wife Poonam De (59) live on the ninth floor of an elite high-rise building in Lake Avenue. Debashish is a businessman by profession. On the other hand, Sanjay, a resident of Giridih in Jharkhand, was working as a cleaner in that high-rise building for the last 5 years. Like every day, he entered the apartment at around 6.30 pm on Thursday. He was accompanied by two other young men whom Sanjay introduced as his friends. They went straight to the ninth-floor flat. They rang the calling bell and called out the house owner''s name. Seeing a familiar face, Debashish opened the door.

As soon as the door opened, Sanjay and the other two attempted to rob the flat. Poonam De screamed in panic. Hearing her scream, some residents tried to climb up. Then the trio fled. Residents alleged that they also fired a round in the air to clear the way for their escape.

However, Sanjay and the other two could not escape. After searching at different places, the three were arrested by the Kolkata police at night. The police were investigating the case.
