Education is cornerstone of progress, empowerment and social change: Vice President

New Delhi, May 06 (HS): Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar on Monday said education is not just a means of acquiring knowledge but it is the cornerstone of progress, empowerment and social change. Dhankhar was addressing the 62nd foundation day celebration of the School of Open Learning (SOL) of Delhi University.

Highlighting education as the most effective transformational mechanism for change, Dhankhar said that education is the key to the lock that opens the doors of progress, prosperity and empowerment. Education is the greatest right and charity. He said that there can be no fundamental right greater than education and no charity can be greater than education.

Highlighting India's historical reputation as a center of knowledge and education, Dhankhar said the country is firmly on the path to regaining its past glory. Referring to the glorious legacy of institutions like Nalanda and Takshashila, the Vice President highlighted the paradigm shift and revival in the educational landscape of India in contemporary times.

He further emphasized that SOL has opened doors for people who were previously helpless due to circumstances. Taking inspiration from the Chandrayaan mission, where it made a smooth landing on the Moon's south pole after initial setbacks, Dhankhar urged students to consider failure as the key to success. He underlined the need for a flexible mindset to deal with the complexities of the modern world. He said, “There is a special feature of Chandrayaan-3 which every student should keep in mind. If Chandrayaan-2 had not happened, Chandrayaan-3 would not have happened. Chandrayaan-2 was not completely successful, but it was successful to a great extent. Every student should keep in mind that failure is not the name of anything. In failure you see the key to success.”

Highlighting the important role of the New Education Policy (NEP) in the Indian educational scenario, Dhankhar said that the NEP ushers in a transformational change, lays down a roadmap for holistic learner development and an informed workforce equipped for the challenges of the 21st century. Builds society. He underlined the NEP's emphasis on flexible learning pathways, technology integration, recognizing diverse needs and aspirations.

He further expressed confidence that institutions like the School of Open Learning will play an important role in increasing access to quality education and bridging long-standing gaps, as envisioned by the NEP.

Vice Chancellor of Delhi University, Professor Yogesh Singh, faculty members, students and other dignitaries were present on the occasion.
