Veteran writer Malti Joshi, honored with Padma Shri, passes away


Delhi, May 16 (HS): Veteran writer Malti Joshi, honored with Padma Shri, passed away at the age of 90. His family has confirmed his death.

Malti Joshi was suffering from esophagus cancer for some time. He died on Wednesday at the residence of his son Sachchidanand Joshi in Delhi. Sachchidanand Joshi is a renowned litterateur and member secretary of Indira Gandhi National Center for the Arts (IGNCA). In his last moments, his two sons Rishikesh and Sachchidanand and daughters-in-law Archana and Malvika were with him.

Malti Joshi, the author of more than fifty Hindi and Marathi story collections, is considered to be the most popular Hindi story writer after Shivani. Malti Joshi's unique storytelling style holds a special place in the literary world. His works have been the subject of research in many universities across India. His literary contributions have left an indelible mark on readers and scholars alike. He has written more than 60 books. Malti Joshi was awarded the prestigious Padmashree award in 2018 for her significant contribution to literature.

Malti Joshi was born on June 4, 1934 in Aurangabad and was educated in Madhya Pradesh. He graduated from Holkar College of Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar University, Indore. After his undergraduate education, he obtained a Master of Arts degree in Hindi Literature in 1956.

Some of Joshi's stories have been adapted for television by Doordarshan. He appeared in the television shows 'Saat Phere' produced by Jaya Bachchan and 'Kirdaar' produced by Gulzar. His stories have been translated into Marathi, Urdu, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Punjabi, Malayalam, Kannada along with English, Russian and Japanese languages.
