At least 37 killed in flash floods in Indonesia's Sumatra Island


Padang, 13 May (HS): Heavy rains and floods killed at least 37 people in Sumatra Island in Indonesia. Officials on Sunday said that more than 12 people were reported missing.

National Disaster Management Agency Spokesperson Abdul Murhari said monsoon rains and slush and cold lava from Mount Merapi sliding into rivers around midnight on Saturday caused floods. Four districts on the island are flooded. More than 100 buildings were inundated.

The rescue teams found 19 dead bodies from the most affected Canduang village of Agam district. Two bodies were recovered from neighbouring Tanah Datar district. In Padang district, eight people died in floods. The rescue teams are searching for 18 others who were reported missing.
