Taiwan struck by 5.5 intensity earthquake


Taipei, 22 Apr (HS): A strong earthquake struck Taiwan’s capital on Monday. The magnitude of the earthquake was measured at 5.5 on the Richter scale. The Central Weather Administration said that epicentre of the quake was at eastern Hualien City.

The same region was hit by a 7.4magnitude earthquake on April 3 causing landslides that blocked off roads and buildings badly damaged.

The earthquake on Monday hit Taiwan around 5.08 pm local time and could be felt in the capital city of Taipei. The US Geological Survey put it at 5.3 magnitudes at a depth of 8.9 kilometers.

Hualien Fire Department said that it has departed teams to inspect any disaster in the region. Taiwan is prone to earthquakes as it is located at the junction of two tectonic plates.

So far any casualty or damage to property has not been reported.
