Jakarta, 18 Apr (HS): The Indonesian Government has issued a Tsunami alert after the Ruang Mountain volcano erupted on Wednesday. About 11,000 people have been directed to leave the area. Thousands of feet high ash started erupting from the mountain. At least 800 residents left the area earlier on Wednesday.

At least five eruptions were seen during 24 hours from the volcano on the northern side of Sulawesi Island, Indonesia’s Centre for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation said.

Indonesia has 120 active volcanoes located along the ‘Ring of Fire’, a seismic fault line around the Pacific Ocean. Authorities urged the tourists to stay at least six kilometers away from Ruang volcano. Officials suspect that a part of the volcano may collapse into the sea and cause a Tsunami.

The National Disaster Mitigation Agency said that the residents will be shifted to Manado, the nearest city to Sulawesi Island.

In 2018 the eruption of Anak Krakatau volcano caused a Tsunami killing 430 people along the coast of Java and Sumatra.
