Berlin, 1 April (HS): Despite objections from the opposition politicians, Germany has legalised possession of recreational cannabis.

Adults (18 and above) are permitted to possess up to 25 gms of dried cannabis under the new law and can cultivate a maximum of three marijuana plants at home. Besides Germany, Malta and Luxembourg have some of the most lenient laws in Europe.

Malta and Luxembourg legalised recreational cannabis in 2021 and 2023, respectively. At the same time, the Netherlands adopted a strict stance to combat cannabis tourism.
