IIT Kanpur creates a novel 'protective layer for microwave metamaterial absorbers'

Kanpur, 30 Aug (HS): The Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (IITK) has created a unique Protective Layer for Microwave Metamaterial Absorbers and Method Thereof, which has been granted Indian patent number 445111.

Dr. Kajal Chaudhary, Senior Student Research Associate of the Department of Electrical Engineering, Prof. Janakarajan Ramkumar of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, and other experts are leading the breakthrough discovery.

By tackling a critical barrier in electromagnetic wave absorption technology, this unique innovation has the potential to alter several areas spanning from defense to daily living. The capacity to identify things using reflected waves has grown increasingly accurate in an era of enhanced waves and radar-based devices. Certain applications, both military and civilian, need the concealment of materials.

This sparked a surge in interest in microwave metamaterial electromagnetic absorbers, particularly those made using transparent conductive sheets. The usage of such films, such as Indium tin oxide coated polyethylene terephthalate (ITO-PET) sheets, has been hampered by their sensitivity to scratches and associated loss of conductivity over time, compromising their performance and longevity. These constraints are addressed by the new invention.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Prof. Abhay Karandikar, Director of IIT Kanpur, stated, In today's fast-changing world, effective technological integration is critical. This innovative invention represents a breakthrough in electromagnetic wave absorption technology. It is not only a significant technological advancement, but also a testament to the possibilities that coordinated efforts across disciplines may offer. It promises to make our settings safer, more secure, and less contaminated by electromagnetic radiation. It has the potential to have a worldwide influence.

This patent describes a game-changing solution for electromagnetic wave absorption. The current invention is a transparent microwave metamaterial absorber with a protective coating that may be used directly on optically clear windows for electromagnetic wave absorption. Various nations employ RADAR detection systems at microwave frequency ranges to detect any item by sensing the waves reflected back from it. Continuous electromagnetic radiation from Wifi, mobile phone towers, radar, diagnostic medical equipment, and other electronic/communication systems is hazardous to one's health.

The proposed protective transparent sheet absorbs more than 90% of the incident electromagnetic waves at microwave frequency, says Prof. Kumar Vaibhav Srivastava of IIT Kanpur's Department of Electrical Engineering. This breakthrough has far-reaching consequences in a variety of sectors. The novel protected transparent microwave metamaterial absorber may be directly placed on optically clear windows, allowing them to absorb more than 90% of incident electromagnetic waves at microwave frequencies.
