Imphal, February 17 (HS): While stressing the urgent need for the preservation and promotion of indigenous games and sports of Manipur, MLA of Thangmeiband Assembly Constituency, Khumukcham Joykishan Singh has assured to develop of a dedicated ground for Mukna Kangjei in the state.

The MLA made the suggestion while addressing the gathering at the opening ceremony of the 3rd Governor’s Mukna Kangjei Trophy – 2023 being organised by Kreeda Bharati, Manipur here at Ima Laikhulembi Lampak, Khurai Kongpal Sajor Leikai.

Mukna Kangjei of Manipur is now almost in a state of extinction. We all have a responsibility to preserve and promote this rare form of games, Joykishan said while assuring that he would propose to allocate a budget for the promotion of Manipur’s indigenous games and sports in the ensuing assembly session.

Padmashree Awardee, Th. Chaoba Singh, who attended the inaugural ceremony as Chief Guest also expressed his opinion on the inclusion of Mukna Kangjei in the Khello India sports list.

Mukna Kangjei is a particular form of wrestling. It is the most masculine game, which involves endurance, vigour and stamina apart from techniques, good mental and physical health.

The former union Minister also stated that he will urge the Prime Minister, union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports and others concerned to promote the indigenous games and sports of Manipur.

Since its inception in 2009 Kreeda Bharati, a national sports organization, has been working for the promotion of different indigenous games and sports in this country. In this 3rd edition of the Governor’s Mukna Kangjei Trophy, 4 teams namely Imphal West, Bishnupur, Kakching and Thoubal are participating.

MLA of Wangkhei Assembly Constituency, Th. Arunkumar Singh and President of Kreeda Bharati Manipur Prant, T. Subaschandra Singh also attended.
