Chennai, 08 September (H.S.): The Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly is set to conclude its Budget session today after completing the remaining debates on departmental demands for grants.

On the final day, members will discuss allocations for Transport, Public Works, Finance, Planning and Development, the State Legislature, pensions and other retirement benefits. Ministers handling these portfolios are expected to respond to issues raised during the debate and announce new schemes and administrative measures.

The House is likely to complete the grant proceedings by the afternoon. It will then consider pending measures before the Speaker brings the session to a close, ending weeks of discussions on government spending, welfare initiatives, infrastructure and administration.

The session began with the presentation of the state's general Budget for 2026-27 on August 5. The Agriculture Budget followed on August 6, while members debated both financial statements on August 7, 10 and 11.

Finance Minister Maria Wilson and Agriculture Minister Vinod replied to the Budget discussions on August 12, explaining the government's fiscal and agricultural priorities and addressing concerns voiced by ruling-party and opposition legislators.

Department-wise debates on demands for grants commenced on August 17. Ministers subsequently detailed the policies and programmes of their departments, answered members' questions and unveiled new projects.

Proceedings on Monday focused on allocations for the Police and Fire and Rescue Services departments. Chief Minister Vijay answered questions and observations raised by legislators during the discussion.

The sitting also witnessed heated political exchanges after Vijay accused former chief minister and DMK leader M.K. Stalin and Opposition Leader Udhayanidhi Stalin over matters linked to funds received by their party. His remarks drew sharp reactions, heightening tension in the House.

The session has combined detailed scrutiny of expenditure proposals with vigorous clashes between the treasury and opposition benches over governance, law and order, development priorities and political accountability.
