Thiruvananthapuram, 08 September (H.S.): Kerala is experiencing unusually hot weather, with temperatures rising three to four degrees Celsius above normal in several parts of the state. The India Meteorological Department has warned that elevated temperatures are likely to persist across the state for two consecutive days.

High atmospheric humidity is making conditions more uncomfortable, causing people to feel considerably warmer than the temperature shown on thermometers. The combination of heat and moisture has intensified the discomfort in many districts, particularly during the daytime.

The weakening of the southwest monsoon has been identified as the main reason for the rise in temperature. Reduced rainfall and cloud cover have allowed daytime temperatures to climb, bringing an unseasonably warm spell to Kerala during a period usually associated with active monsoon conditions.

Despite the sharp increase, weather officials have not classified the prevailing conditions as a heatwave. However, the departure from normal temperatures has been significant in a number of locations.

Punalur recorded the highest temperature in the state at 36.2 degrees Celsius. This was 4.4 degrees above the average temperature normally recorded in the area, underlining the unusual intensity of the current warm spell.

Kottayam recorded 35 degrees Celsius, while Thrissur and Palakkad each registered 34.3 degrees Celsius. Several other areas also experienced warmer and more humid conditions, making outdoor activity uncomfortable.

The persistent heat has drawn attention because it has coincided with a weak phase of the monsoon, which normally moderates temperatures through widespread rainfall. Unless monsoon activity strengthens, the state could continue to experience above-normal warmth.

Residents are likely to face heightened discomfort as high humidity limits the body's ability to cool itself through perspiration. The weather department is continuing to monitor temperature patterns and the progress of the monsoon across Kerala.
