Thiruvananthapuram, 08 September (H.S.):

Kerala is facing a worsening electricity shortage, with power cuts lasting more than half an hour being imposed during the evening and night.

The latest restrictions were enforced between 6 p.m. and midnight as the Kerala State Electricity Board struggled to meet a sharp rise in demand. Night-time supply interruptions have now continued for five consecutive days, underlining the growing pressure on the state's power system.

According to the KSEB, unusually high temperatures have pushed up electricity consumption, particularly during peak hours. The increased use of air conditioners and other cooling appliances in homes, offices and commercial establishments has contributed significantly to the surge.

Peak-hour demand this year is estimated to be between 500 MW and 800 MW higher than during the corresponding period last year. The increase has created a gap between supply and demand at a time when Kerala is also receiving less power from the national grid.

The state generally depends on electricity purchased through power exchanges to manage additional demand in the evenings. However, adequate power has not been available through these exchanges, forcing the board to introduce emergency restrictions to protect the grid and prevent a wider disruption.

A weaker-than-expected monsoon has compounded the problem. Reduced rainfall has limited relief from the heat, keeping consumption high, while also raising concerns over water availability for hydropower generation.

The duration and location of the outages may vary depending on demand and the availability of electricity from outside the state. Consumers could face further night-time interruptions if temperatures remain high and market supplies do not improve.

The developing crisis has highlighted Kerala's vulnerability during periods of peak consumption, when it relies heavily on power imported from other regions. The KSEB is closely monitoring demand and supply conditions as it attempts to maintain stability across the network.
