New Delhi, September 07 (H.S.): Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Monday said women have consistently played a transformative role in India’s history, culture and nation-building journey, and continue to be vital contributors to the country’s progress.

Addressing a two-day capacity-building workshop for women legislators organised by the National Commission for Women in Faridabad, Birla highlighted the significant contribution of women to India’s institutional, spiritual, religious and cultural traditions.

He said women had contributed to the country’s transformation across different phases, from the freedom movement and the framing of the Constitution to the ongoing process of nation-building.

Birla stressed the importance of strengthening the capabilities of women legislators and ensuring their meaningful participation in democratic institutions. He said effective legislative participation and leadership by women can further strengthen governance and contribute to inclusive national development.

The Lok Sabha Speaker has previously emphasised that greater participation of women in public institutions and governance is essential for building an inclusive and developed India. The Parliamentary Research and Training Institute for Democracies and other parliamentary platforms have also undertaken programmes aimed at strengthening the capacity of legislators and encouraging greater participation of women in democratic processes.

The workshop in Faridabad is aimed at enhancing the skills and institutional capacity of women legislators while providing a platform for discussion, knowledge-sharing and exchange of legislative experiences.
