Lucknow, 07 Sept (HS): On

the occasion of the death of famous scientist and pioneer of Indian radio

astronomy Prof. Govind Swarup, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath

paid respect to him. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath paid tribute to Prof.

Swarup's legacy, stating that his constant efforts and hard work considerably

improved India's scientific skills. Professor Govind Swarup, 91, died on

September 7, 2020, in Pune. He was born in Thakurdwara, Uttar Pradesh, and is

well known as the Father of Indian Radio Astronomy. He was a major

visionary in the development and construction of world-class facilities such as

the Ooty Radio Telescope and the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) in

Pune. In 1973, he received the coveted Padma Shri Award for his significant

contributions to science.

Professor Govind Swarup, the pioneer and father of Indian radio astronomy,

died on September 7, 2020. Govind Swarup, born on March 23, 1929, was a global

leader in radio astronomy who established world-class scientific infrastructure

in India.

Ooty Radio Telescope (ORT): He oversaw the design and construction of this

large cylindrical telescope in Tamil Nadu.

Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT): Located near Pune, this array of 30

completely steerable parabolic radio telescopes was created with his goal,

putting India on the global map for low-frequency radio astronomy.

Meanwhile, UP CM mentioned in a post on X, “On

the death anniversary of Prof. Govind Swarup, the father of Indian radio astronomy,

humble tribute. By making India a world leader in the field of radio astronomy,

he also made unprecedented contributions to enhancing the country's scientific

capabilities and research through his tireless efforts and foresight. His life

will always inspire youth and scientists to innovate for the nation's progress.”
