New Delhi, September 07 (H.S.): The Supreme Court has expressed deep concern over the growing incidents of doctors being assaulted by members of political parties in Maharashtra. During the hearing of a case concerning the assault of a doctor in Maharashtra, a bench headed by Justice Vikram Nath observed that people belonging to the same political ideology were involved in attacks on doctors.

The Supreme Court made the observation while hearing a petition filed by Shiv Sena councillor Ramesh Mhatre, who challenged the bail conditions imposed in connection with the assault of doctors at Shastri Nagar Hospital in Kalyan.

The court said that such political leaders and workers should be taken into custody immediately and should not be allowed to move around freely on the streets. It observed that entering a doctor's chamber and brutally assaulting them could not, under any circumstances, be treated as normal or acceptable behaviour.

The Supreme Court stressed that strict action must be taken against those who assault doctors so that others are deterred from engaging in such acts.
