New Delhi, September 07 (H.S.): The Bangladesh High Commission has expressed deep sorrow over the collapse of a five-storey paying guest (PG) hostel building in Delhi's Satya Niketan area. The High Commission conveyed its condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the incident and offered prayers for the injured and those feared to be trapped under the rubble. Six people have so far died in the incident, while six others are reported to be in stable condition.

In a condolence message posted on X on Monday, the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi said it was deeply shocked by the tragic building collapse in Satya Niketan. It expressed its profound condolences to the families and loved ones of the deceased. The mission said its thoughts and prayers were with those injured and those who may still be trapped beneath the debris. It also expressed solidarity with all women, men and children affected by the tragedy and those facing distress during this difficult time.

The incident occurred on September 6 at 'Hostel Days', a five-storey PG hostel building located in the Satya Niketan area near the South Campus of Delhi University. The building was reportedly around 40 to 50 years old. According to preliminary information, repair work was underway in the basement at the time of the incident. Accumulation of water in the basement and ongoing repair work in the ageing structure are believed to have compromised its structural stability, resulting in the collapse.

Following the incident, there were concerns that a large number of people could be trapped beneath the debris. Initial reports suggested that between 15 and 50 people might have been trapped. During the rescue operation, 12 people have so far been pulled out, six of whom have died, while the other six have survived and are reported to be in stable condition. All the injured are undergoing treatment, and their families are being kept informed about their condition.

Several agencies, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), are engaged in relief and rescue operations. The removal of debris and search for any people who may still be trapped are continuing at the site.

A First Information Report (FIR) has been registered against the building owner over alleged negligence in connection with the incident. Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the collapse, including whether required safety standards were followed during construction and repair work.
