NEW DELHI, September 07 (H.S.): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday morning, as usual, shared a Subhashitam on X, posting the verse: “Sham no vatah pavatam, sham nas tapatu Suryah. Sham nah kanikradad devah, parjanyo’bhivarshatu.” Through the verse, he prayed for the well-being and welfare of the wind, the Sun and the rain-bearing deity.

The verse is the 10th mantra of the 36th chapter of the Shukla Yajurveda Samhita. It invokes the various elements of nature and offers a prayer for the welfare of humanity and the universe. Prime Minister Modi shared it on X, reflecting a sense of connection with nature and the environment.

The essence of the verse is: “May the wind blow for us in a benevolent, pleasant and pure manner. May the Sun shine upon us auspiciously, with its heat and light providing life and energy rather than causing destruction. May the clouds, which thunder divinely, shower us with life-giving and beneficial rain.”

The significance of this mantra lies in the extent to which it reflects the scientific and nature-centred outlook of the ancient Indian sages. Human life is completely dependent on clean air, balanced sunlight and timely rainfall. Any disruption in this natural balance — whether through air pollution, excessive heat, drought or floods — can place the entire human civilisation at risk.

The mantra therefore conveys a message of environmental conservation and encourages humanity to live in harmony with nature.
