Thiruvananthapuram, 07 September (H.S.): Malayalam filmmaker R. Sarath, known for socially engaged cinema and documentaries, has died at the age of 63. He passed away at a private hospital in Thiruvananthapuram, bringing to a close a career distinguished by artistic commitment and national recognition.

Sarath directed several notable films, including Sayahnam, Sheelabathi, Buddhan Chirikkunnu and Sthithi. His work frequently examined social realities and human relationships while retaining a strong literary and visual sensibility. Sayahnam emerged as one of his best-known films and secured seven Kerala State Film Awards.

He began his career as a documentary filmmaker before moving into feature films. During the filming of the documentary The Painted Epics, Sarath discovered rare murals associated with celebrated artist Raja Ravi Varma. The works had not previously been displayed before the public, and the discovery was regarded as an important development in research into Ravi Varma's artistic legacy.

His sustained study of mural paintings also earned him a junior fellowship from the Union government's Department of Culture in 1996. This early phase of his career reflected his interest in art history and helped shape the distinctive approach he later brought to cinema.

Among his acclaimed works was Bhoomikkoru Charamageetham, a short film based on a poem by O.N.V. Kurup. The production explored environmental concerns and feminist aesthetics. His feature film Sthithi, which portrayed the lives of a couple employed at the Secretariat, also received wide appreciation. Playback singer Unni Menon played the lead role in the film.

Over the course of his career, Sarath received several national and state honours. These included the Indira Gandhi Award for the best debut film by a director, the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Malayalam, Kerala State awards for best film and second-best film, and honours for short film and story. His death marks a significant loss to Malayalam cinema.
