Dhubri (Assam), 07 September (HS): A 60-year-old shopkeeper has been arrested in Assam’s Dhubri district for allegedly sexually assaulting a six-year-old girl at his shop in Chitalkati village under the Bandihana Police Outpost.

The accused, identified as Juran Ali, was taken into custody by police within hours after the girl’s family lodged a complaint regarding the alleged incident.

According to the complaint, the child had gone to Ali’s shop when he allegedly lured her inside and sexually assaulted her. After returning home, she reportedly told her family about the incident, following which they approached the Bandihana Police Outpost and filed a complaint.

A police team led by investigating officer Kapil Uddin Ahmed subsequently launched an operation and arrested the accused.

Police said on Monday that Ali allegedly confessed to the offence during interrogation. However, the statement will be examined as part of the ongoing investigation and dealt with in accordance with due legal procedure.

The child was later taken for a medical examination. Police said the examination indicated sexual assault and reported physical injuries.

Ali has been sent to judicial custody as the investigation continues. Police said further legal action will be taken based on the evidence gathered in the case.------------
