Thrissur, 06 September (H.S.): A couple and their three-year-old son were killed after a speeding car, allegedly driven by an intoxicated motorist, rammed their motorcycle from behind near Kurukkanpara at Arthatt in Kunnamkulam on Saturday night.

The victims were identified as Muneer, 39, his wife Shafna, 28, and their son Muhammad Ameen Ibac, 3. The family, residents of Edakkazhiyur in Thrissur district, was travelling towards Guruvayur when the accident occurred near Excel Public School on the Kunnamkulam-Guruvayur road at about 11.38 pm.

According to Kunnamkulam police, the car, bearing registration number KL-46-U-6001, was travelling in the same direction at excessive speed when it crashed into the family’s motorcycle, registered as KL-46-T-8199. The force of the collision threw all three occupants onto the road and left them critically injured.

Residents who heard the crash rushed to the spot and shifted the victims to nearby private hospitals. Despite medical efforts, all three died while undergoing treatment.

Police said the car driver fled without helping the injured or alerting the authorities. A search has been launched to identify, trace and arrest him.

A case has been registered under Sections 105 and 110 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with Sections 134(a), 134(b), 185 and 187 of the Motor Vehicles Act. The provisions cover culpable homicide, attempt to commit culpable homicide, drunken driving and failure to assist victims or report an accident.

The bodies were kept at two private hospitals and will be handed over to relatives after inquest proceedings and postmortem examinations at Kunnamkulam Government Taluk Hospital.

The tragedy occurred a day after eight engineering students from Tamil Nadu were killed in a collision at Panambikkunnu in Kaipamangalam, also in Thrissur district. The back-to-back accidents have renewed concerns over speeding and road safety across the district.
